WEEK 12: Final Trump Editorial

Image
The technique of paper cutting definitely helped when trying to present my illustrative style. It also helped me think more simplistically with shapes and colours. Using the lasso tool in Photoshop, I was able to create a similar cutting effect. My aim with this piece is to show that the 'roach spray' can represents Trump, relating back to his use of vocabulary when describing immigrants as a form of 'infestation'.   Tweet: (19/06/18) http://time.com/5316087/donald-trump-immigration-infest/

WEEK 11: Trump Editorial Development

Image
After researching several creatives for inspiration, I decided to revisit the TIME Trump editorial and develop this further. I started sketching imagery based on the vocabulary I have previously looked at, mainly focusing on the idea of a 'swarm' or ''infestation'. I experimented with combining symbols/imagery with Trump rather than just drawing Trump himself. I feel the strongest ideas focused on the president being a form of pest control or bug killer, My tutor suggested I then take one of my ideas and experiment with cutting paper to construct my pieces. An example of this can be seen below:

WEEK 10: Inspiration

Image
In order to gain inspiration when producing my editorial pieces, I looked at several creatives. I found that my drawings did not reflect my illustrative style and I tended to focus too much on providing lots of detail. When working on previous editorial tasks, I have learnt that small visual elements such as symbols, colours, composition can have a stronger impact that pieces that are extremely detailed. The artist Daniel Pudles was recommended to me when looking for inspiration. When looking at Pudles work, they appear very bold and focus on strong shapes.  I love producing lino prints and paper cut pieces, as it encourages me to think more simplistically with shapes. This could be applied to my work, as it would help me consider the most important pieces of content to include, rather than trying to over complicate my pieces. I aim to avoid the obvious imagery, I feel Pudles achieves this as he often works in a non-literal manner. Daniel Pudles  Scott St...
