S2 WEEK 5: Jacinda Ardern Editorial

'I'll be prime minister AND a mum'

New Zealand leader Jacinda Ardern, 37, announces she's pregnant with her first child (and will only take six weeks' leave)
Before planning my initial ideas for this piece, I conducted research into key symbols of New Zealand. This influenced my decision to include the kiwi bird, in order to represent the country. I aimed to show Ardern trying to balance taking care of a child alongside being Prime Minister. I received positive feedback on the composition of the piece, but small details needed refining. Ardern does not appear to be very affectionate towards the child. I would improve this by showing her cradling the child closer to her, to show a motherly figure and a stronger bond.

Each figure has a tendency to use repetition making certain words more prominent. For example, Trump uses the word 'Amazing' often when delivering speeches. He also uses words associated with animals which I have previously looked at when producing an editorial piece.  Putin's vocabulary appears sterner and more serious with words such as 'order', 'dangerous' and 'destroy. How Illustration has been utilised within Propaganda, Satire and Protest Imagery The topic focuses on how illustration can be used within propaganda, being biased towards a political or social opinion. In order to investigate the topic, examples of successful propaganda will be analysed in depth, focusing on the use of key visual elements used to persuade the audience of a particular view. The visual use of symbols and semiotics can be used to influence a viewer’s opinion. A possible outcome for this topic could be a set of posters based on a current event, arguing either for or against the subject matter. Portraits of political figures or sketches of speeches could provide inspiration for final outcomes. S2 WEEK 10: Gun Lobby Propaganda

When illustrating Propaganda, I decided to focus on gun lobbies. The group argue for the right of members of the public to be able to own guns. This piece was created using stamps and then edited digitally. Stamps allowed me to produce a similar aesthetic to lino print. I tried to merge the gun with the thumbs up, in order to show the groups of approval of the weapons. Although I think it communicates their view towards guns, I feel the composition could be improved. The gun could be drawn in the shape of the thumbs up, rather than layering two separate images. I found propaganda quite challenging to illustrate and feel I could have explored this topic further.
