WEEK 3: Devices of Propaganda & Power Posing Theory

The Institute for Propaganda Analysis- The Seven Devices
  • Bandwagon- Everybody is doing this.
  • Card Stacking- Use of facts or falsehoods, illustrations or distractions, and logical or illogical statements to give the best or the worst possible case for an idea, program, person, or product.
  • Glittering Generalities- Creating acceptance and approval without examination of the evidence. Using vague, broad statements that will connect with the audience's beliefs and values.
  • Name-Calling- Giving an idea, group or person a bad label to create prejudice against them.
  • Plain Folks- Convincing an audience that their ideas are good because they are for the people and relate to the common folk/people.
  • Testimonial- Having a respected or hated person say that a given idea is good or bad.
  • Transfer- Carries the respect and authority of something respected to something else to make the latter accepted. Also works with something that is disrespected to make the latter rejected.

Power Posing Theory (Amy Cuddy TED Talk)
  • Cuddy’s theory suggests that you can tell if someone is being honest by their verbal (words) and non-verbal (body language) signals. If both signals match, they are more likely to be genuine/honest e.g. avoiding eye contact could suggest someone is lying. Folding your arms can be considered defensive or less powerful.
  • It also suggest that by using strong body language, you are more likely to succeed and have a better quality of life. Although this has not been disproves, it is evident that other factors will affect this and the theory should not be taken too literally.
  • Business professor Dana Carney researched the theory further as it proved to be flawed following several experiments. Carney’s research suggests that non-verbal language should be used in moderation. The line can be crossed when looking at confidence and arrogance. The overuse of strong body language can be seen as ‘creepy’, overpowering, or disingenuous.
